Not many people are aware that there are many different types of acne; the most common variety being referred to as acne vulgaris by dermatologists. Acne vulgaris is actually an umbrella term that covers several subcategories of acne.

Acne vulgaris represents the least intense manifestations of acne, and dermatologists classify the subcategories or different types of acne according to their appearance.

Blackheads: have a dark color because of a chemical reaction between oxygen and melanin, making the acne look black. Blackheads occur when the pores get partially obstructed and the dead skin cells, bacteria and oils escape to the skin’s surface.  

Papules: look raw and irritated, and there is no head. People should never pick at the papules as this can cause scarring.

Pustule: Of the different types of acne, this is the most commonly seen. A pustule looks like a papule which has been crossed with whitehead. It looks like an irritated pimple on a red underbelly, with a milky head.

More serious type of acne

Out of the different types of acne, this is a type more intense and longer lasting. It can manifest as a pus filled cyst or a sub dermal nodule, larger than the regular acne and more painful. This type of acne forms below the dermas, and if left untreated, it can cause scarring. It needs to be treated by a dermatologist who will treat it with cortisone.   

Rosacea: is like a strawberry colored rash appearing on the sufferer’s cheeks, like a constant blush. Usually the surface may be pocked or speckled with very small pimples; whiteheads may pop up on the affected area, but blackheads are not present.

Rosacea often troubles older people as well as the younger, which is unlike the other forms of acne. It has some curious gender characteristics; although it occurs more in women, when it occurs in men, it does so in a much more severe form. There are some other serious types of acne such as pyoderma and conglobata which are fortunately rarer. When these occur, they are more intense and spread over more areas of the body.
